Famous Visitors To St Mary's

The captain of the Belfast Giants visited Saint Mary’s Derrymore to promote reading to boys and girls. The readathon had initially prizes of tickets to Belfast Giants games for those pupils who read the greatest number of books in a monthly period. During his talk, the Belfast Giants captain said that “A professional sporting life is short…” and his college coaches in America promoted additional academic qualifications as a necessity for a professional sportsman. “You need to do something after your sporting career or if God forbid in the case of serious injury. Education is easy carried.”
The European Cup
Also visiting the school recently was Mr Peter Bunting, who brought with him a replica of the former European Cup (now known as the Champions League). This cup was the cup given to the club to keep when they won the European Cup. It is the property of Glasgow Celtic Football Club.

Sam Maguire

Culbert Donnelly, from Tyrone County Board, visited Saint Mary’s with Columb Walsh (Chairman of Aghagallon GFC) bringing with him the Tom Markham Cup, The Sam Maguire and the Christy Ring hurling cup to promote GAA within the school.
